New traffic channelizer meets NCHRP-350 crash test.
Cordonator is the trade name for a new traffic channelizer design from Cogent Enterprises, Inc. of Sterling Heights, Michigan. Cordonator is the same size as conventional traffic barrels and will accommodate ballast and beacons currently in use. The big difference is, Cordonator folds flat to 4.5" thick and can ship with lantern attached. This means less worker time in traffic during set-up and retrieval. It also means shipping, handling, and storage costs are dramatically reduced.
The unit meets requirements of NCHRP 350, with light attached. Cordonator is compliant to M.U.T.C.D. (Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices), and has patent pending. It has numerous benefits over existing channelizer designs. It can be ballasted with water, sand, conventional rings, or a custom base. The unit has been welcomed and encouraged by many people in the industry. Some have declared it may become the new standard. The handling characteristics alone will make cordoning of work zones easier and more productive. This should maximize municipal budgets in an area where cost savings are hard to find.
Safety is also improved. Flat surfaces and several reflective points make Cordonator highly visible. Sheeting is easily applied and handling is ergonomic. Unlike conventional channelizers, Cordonators will not roll when they are hit.
Overall height is the same as drum style channelizers and they are a few pounds heavier. The two pieces can be shipped together or separate, with or without reflective sheeting. They are easily put together or taken apart. A unique ball and detent snaps the units in place with a simple twist of the handle. A second version of Cordonator is under development. It will accommodate various attachments and function as a versatile barricade. This will make Cordonators attractive to several additional markets such as utilities, police, fire and construction. After-market options will accommodate signs, tape and accessories.
